Over the past 25 years that we have served on the mission field, one of our observations is the tremendous need for a place for young people to come spend a period of time beyond the typical 2 weeks short mission trip experience to see and feel the reality of mission life. This would give them many opportunities and time with which to pray and let God speak to them about the mission field. We have had several interns with us on an informal basis in the past and have felt the Lord speaking to us about offering an internship here in Iquitos. Below is some information and guidelines that we feel important for such an internship.
Purpose:
1. To offer young people who feel they have a calling to missions an opportunity to serve God for 3-6 month period on the mission field and to learn from another culture. 2. To spend enough time to realize what long term missions is really about. 3. To offer some trans-cultural studies and experience for the interns. 4. To receive some basic language training while they are here.
General accommodations:
1. We could have up to 4 young women and/or 4 young men at one time. 2. The women would stay with two young Peruvian women that we have on the mission property. 3. The young men would stay in the dorm room on the mission property. 4. Meals would be prepared by the interns and they would live independently from the missionary family. 5. Under the right circumstances an intern could live with a host family.
Requirements:
1. Have a heart for missions and a desire to spend time on the mission field to find out if missions and mission life is for them. 2. Written recommendation by parents and pastors. 3. Be willing to submit to the leadership of Ron and Annette Thiesen and our leadership team during the time they are in Peru. 4. Preferable post High School, but special cases may be considered. 5. Fill out and present application, references and waivers. We retain the right to refuse any applicant and/or send them home if they do not fulfill their commitment. (E-mail us for applications.)
Basic Schedule:
1. Each intern would agree to work in some mutually predetermined project for half a day in the mission or local church according to their desires and talents, and according to our needs. 2. The second half of the day would be occupied in classes, studies and personal language learning, or other activities as determined by the leadership. 3. They would travel with the river ministry teams to gain experience spiritually and culturally, as well as help in the work that is scheduled. 4. Ministry opportunities with the local church would give them a chance to discover their talents and calling.
Commitments:
1. 3 to 6 months, extendable upon approval from leadership. 2. Commit to keep a humble heart and learn from the culture and the Peruvian people. 3. Commitment to pay all of their own expenses in air travel, food and lodging, visa renewal, personal needs, river trips, etc. 4. Commit to the daily schedule of work and studies and submission to the Thiesens.
